2027 Theme: Accessibility as a Cornerstone of Information Literacy
In April 2024, the Department of Justice issued its final rule updating its regulations in Title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act. The new rule contained updated requirements for web and mobile content to be accessible to people with disabilities. The compliance date was later extended to April 2027 for most large public entities, including many K-12 and post-secondary institutions. Organizational responses have varied. What is seldom discussed is how accessible materials impact the teaching of strategies to find and responsibly use information.
Our 2027 conference theme aims to fill that gap. We are defining accessibility broadly, and we seek proposals that address, but are not limited to, the following topics:
- Collaborations between librarians and faculty to support accessible materials or the improvement of existing materials
- Writing centers’ and learning centers’ creation, revision, or delivery of accessible materials, programs, and services
- Designing information literacy instruction built around accessible materials
- Learner evaluations of software or applications delivering accessible content
- Strategies for helping learners who have a disability develop critical thinking skills
- Accessibility within Generative AI tools
- Fostering learning environments that recognize and respond to challenges of individual students
- Teaching learners how to write and develop accessible materials as a career and lifelong skill
- “Lessons learned” or cautionary tales from practice
- Strategies for discussing accessibility with decision-makers
- Mentoring other educators to develop accessible information literacy tools and exercises
- Approaches to developing accessible information literacy instruction for learners outside the United States
- Arts-based, tactile, or experiential approaches to developing information literacy
We welcome a variety of presentation formats, including individual paper sessions, panel discussions, interactive workshops, and innovative multimedia/digital demonstrations. Proposals should clearly articulate the scholarly merits, methodological rigor, and relevance to the conference theme.
